The Overview of the Day tour to Tarangire National Park

The day tour to Tarangire National Park will take you to a beautiful and famous park. Tarangire National Park covering an area of 2850 square kilometers was established in 1970. It is a famous area for the large herds of elephants, the huge Baobab trees, other mammals and birds.

The Park is one of the parks in the northern part of Tanzania with the highest congregations of wildlife. It is probably ahead of the rest of the National Parks in the country. The park is named after the Tarangire River. It flows through the park from the South-East and empties its waters into Lake Burunge to the west.

Almost dividing the park into two halves, the Tarangire River is the only source of water for the animals here. During the dry period – June to September – big herds of animals congregate along with it for water drink. This park is probably the least visited of the northern Tanzania game parks. It retains a real air of undiscovered Africa, particularly in the south of the park.

Vegetation in Tarangire National Park

Much of the park is grassland together with swamp lands and flood plains, which feed the Tarangire River. The large baobab trees, particularly in the northern section of the park, dot across the landscape and dominate the scenery. Many of the trees are hundreds of years old. Elsewhere, there is acacia woodland, open bush, and groves of palm trees.

Soon after early breakfast, your Safari driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel at 6.00 am. With packed lunches, a 120 kilometer drive to Tarangire National Park main gate starts immediately from here. It is approximately a 2 hour drive all the way there.

On arrival, you will stop for a while, say 10 minutes at the park gate for the formalities.

From here, the game drives start in the park until noon when you will stop for the picnic lunch. Soon after lunch, you shall proceed with afternoon game drives until 4.00 pm. A little while later, you will depart the park with again, a 2 hour drive back to your hotel in Arusha.

The day tour Tarangire National Park

Resident animals are seen all year round. The plains and savannah animals in large numbers, along with resident animals are available in the dry season, June – October. A wildlife census during the wet season in 1980 indicated animal numbers in the Tarangire ecosystem. The animal levels were 32,000 zebras, 30,000 impalas, 25,000 wildebeest, 6,000 buffalo, and 3,000 elephants.

The Wildebeest, Cape buffaloes, Zebras, Grant’s gazelles, and Hartebeest (Kongoni) are available in large numbers during the dry season. When the short rains occur in November, these migrate out of the park towards Lake Manyara and further north. At this time they move on to new areas of grassland. These animal herds then return to the park after the long rains in April and May.

Resident Animals Can be Seen on this Day tour

The resident animals are eland, giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthog, lesser kudu, dik-dik (the smallest of antelopes in Africa). The elephants can often be seen in small or large herds, especially in the dry season. Baboon and Black-faced Vervet monkeys are the most commonly seen species of primates in this park.

The main predators in this park are lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. Other smaller predators include bat-eared foxes, jackals, and on some occasions, wild (hunting) dogs can be seen. Other animals are bush and rock Hyrax (also called dassies), mongoose, ground squirrel, porcupine (mainly nocturnal), and civet cat.

The swamps, tinged green year-round, are the focus of many of the park’s 550 bird species, one of the highest tallies for any protected area anywhere in the world. Many Eurasian migrants can be seen between October and April, which is the best time for bird viewing.

Here is just a shortlist of a few species of the many others available in Tarangire National Park.

Bustard – The Kori bustard (the world’s heaviest flying bird),

Starlings – Ashy Starling (endemic to Tanzania)

The other birds found in Tarangire National Park are Storks, Ibises, Herons, Egrets, Thick-knees, Lapwings, Plovers, Kites, Kestrels, Harriers, Buzzards, Eagles, Vultures, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, Rollers, Hoopoes, Hornbills, Sandgrouse, Doves, Coursers, Francolins, Spurfowls, Cuckoos, Go-away-birds, Parrots, Lovebirds, Woodpeckers,

Drongos, Tchagras, Weavers, Flycatchers, Barbets, Tinkerbirds, Sunbirds, etc.
